In the UK alone, over 4 million people wear contact lenses and this figure has risen steadily over the last couple of decades. Despite their popularity, contact lenses come with a variety of issues, from decreasing the amount of oxygen reaching your eyes and occasionally slipping off-centre, to requiring regular cleaning and bringing a heightened risk of infection. Although contacts can be more convenient than glasses for sports and other daily activities, lens care takes up a lot of time and relies on the patient repeatedly ordering new supplies. Further to this, people are advised not to wear contact lenses for periods longer than 10-12 hours each day, or they risk discomfort and potential infection.
At Optimax, our lens surgery options allow patients to avoid these problems whilst still benefitting from sharp eyesight. We offer two types of lens surgery: Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) and Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL). Both of these options involve inserting an artificial lens into the patient’s eye, providing freedom from glasses and contact lenses. In RLE procedures, the natural lens is removed and is then replaced with an artificial lens. The artificial lens can either be monofocal or multifocal, depending on whether or not the patient wants to eliminate the need for reading glasses. An added benefit of this procedure is that, due to the artificial lens insertion, cataracts cannot form later in life.
With ICL procedures, the artificial lens is placed behind the iris, in front of the natural lens. This is recommended for younger patients who do not currently need reading glasses. As the eye’s natural lens is not removed, the procedure is entirely reversible, should it be necessary or desired later in life. Added benefits include high-quality night vision and UV protection, which are features you would not necessarily get from standard contact lenses.
Our lens surgery also includes Intraocular Lens Implants which are a part of cataract surgery. A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens inside your eye, leaving you with blurred vision, and often worsens over time. Cataract surgery is now the most commonly performed operation in the world and at Optimax, the procedure only takes between 15 and 30 minutes. The cloudy contents of the natural lens is removed and the new Intraocular Lens is then inserted to replace it. The procedure is also regarded as one of the safest surgeries in the world, which explains why it’s performed over 18 million times each year!
